@Geordie - I think you are missing the point. What Marc is saying is that if you help educate the consumer about the real estate process and everything you do, then they will respect your profession more and understand why it costs what it cost to use your services.

As an example of how this can be accomplished, maybe you could keep a log of all of your inbound and outbound calls and actions made on a customers transaction, everything from "called to follow up on title report". Received call from "title office to confirm at escrow", "meet with appraiser"... etc. This helps educate the client about exactly what you did and how hard you worked for them. A) they will appreciate your detailed professionalism displayed in the status reports. B) You can show it to your prospective clients who will understand exactly everything that you will do.

Looking at a list of 400 individual tasks you did and countless hours spent to get their transaction closed would guarantee to "WOW" your client. This over the top service will lead to more word of mouth and referrals and allow you to charge a premium for your services.

Great post. I think you are correct, more transparency could really refresh the RE Industry.

There seem to be two related pieces of information here.

One is showing the value that a competent real estate agent brings to the table. This is expertise in negotiations, specific market knowledge - about certain homes, local regulations, market trends, etc. It is marketing expertise and staging. I think the best real estate agents, bloggers or not, do this part well.

The second part I think is difficult to do without sounding like a victim. We work long hours, have no benefit or retirement or sick leave. 80% of us don't make it more than a year or two in the business. Commission based pay is feast or famine. All these are great reasons not to be an agent, and most people shouldn't try.

But do we any good pouting about this? Does your attorney complain about wasted years in law school or your surgeon talk about how little sleep she got when she was a resident? No. They bill you and move on.
